In Edo Japan, artistry became an effective skill for maintaining power amid competitive clans. Armor offered an opportunity to exhibit one’s wealth and refinement, and the kabuto — the helmet — was the most valued of all items. Inspired by a ceremonial Edo helmet in the shape of flailing octopus, Kabuto reimagines its forms and fluidity, sinuous and twisting. Suggesting the splendor of woven brocades, it is rich and enigmatic, ever-changing as it catches the light.
