Wool has a history of purification. In ancient Rome, the sacred sheep of Jupiter produced fine wool used to cleanse people and spaces. Throughout Europe, it was the common cloth, and some modern wools can still trace their lineage back to the bloodline of medieval flocks. In the 17th century, plague doctors wore waxed wool, canvas and leather garments for protection — as the cloth caught the light, they must have seemed otherworldly.
